The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
The few exceptions to confidentiality include:
If staff become aware or suspicious of the abuse of a child, dependent adult or elderly person, it must be reported to the appropriate authorities immediately.
If a client threatens serious bodily harm to another person, the police and the intended victim(s) must be notified.
If a client expresses intent to harm himself or herself, staff will make every effort to ensure the client's safety. If the client does not cooperate with staff's efforts, further measures will be taken to ensure the person's safety without their permission, as allowed by law.
